Europe's premier porcelain maker, Meissen, takes center stage at Manifatture in Scena
Rooted in centuries of tradition, the German company continues to evolve, reinventing its designs and inspiring new generations of artists. By nurturing a creative spirit, Meissen ensures that its timeless masterpieces remain relevant and captivating for generations to come.
Founded in 1710 by Augustus the Strong, Meissen began producing the first European porcelain at Albrechtsburg, following the groundbreaking discoveries of Johann Friedrich Böttger.
"The secret to Meissen's luminous porcelain lies in the purest kaolin, sourced from the manufactory's own Seilitz mine," says Stefania Baldini, Meissen's exclusive Italian agent. "This exquisite blend of kaolin, feldspar, and quartz has been perfected over centuries and is still handcrafted today”.
In the creation of porcelain, the search for new and innovative paths is anchored in the tradition of the manufactory, as well as the constant reflection on its rich heritage.
Meissen can draw on the world's largest and oldest inventory of plaster molds, models, and historical templates, with which it is possible to reproduce almost all the molds ever made in the manufactory. Meanwhile, in the manufactory's color laboratory, new shades are constantly being developed.
Currently, 10,000 color recipes are carefully stored, with which it is possible to prepare every nuance of Meissen porcelain decorations faithful to the original. In connection with the unique craftsmanship that has been preserved to this day, the Manufactory creates figurines, from a few centimeters tall to life-size sculptures, tableware, and unique works of art of particular value, which meet the highest standards of exclusivity and individuality.
The Meissen porcelain manufactory is synonymous with the highest quality porcelain and extraordinary craftsmanship. Its historical symbol, the crossed blue swords, represents these characteristics all over the world”.
What are the main values that identify the Meissen brand?
"Preserving craftsmanship and cultural heritage without giving up on new things. Every piece begins in the manufactory's mold archive, so every creation today becomes a modern interpretation of European art and cultural history (e.g. the Marilyn bust).
Quality. The training of modelers and painters, which requires more than three years at the internal school, but it takes many more years of learning before becoming a "meister – master.
Today, when an object from the "Limited Masterpieces" collection is created manually over the course of months, it is the result of decades of experience. Last but not least, sustainability: porcelain is the most durable material for tableware, there is almost no waste in production".
Innovation and sustainability: how are these concepts declined in production?
"In every field. For example, ideas are born using modern technologies and cutting-edge ovens, while maintaining refinement and attention to detail in artisanal production.
Furthermore, the Meissen Manufactory has made a commitment to nature with the multi-year campaign 'make the world a better place - Amazonia Project' 2025: together with EKOSFERA, it wants to draw attention to the green lung of our planet, threatened as never before by deforestation, wildfires, and climate change. Taking on social responsibility for our planet is a matter that is dear to us.
For this reason, together with EKOSFERA and the sustainably produced Amazonas Mugs, we want to make a positive contribution to saving the Amazon. With every purchase of a MEISSEN "Amazonas" mug, a donation is made to projects that support the conservation of the rainforest, which offsets the carbon footprint produced on average by a European in three months”.
Meissen is synonymous with the highest quality porcelain, refined and exclusive design, and masterful craftsmanship. Can you elaborate on these three aspects by telling the story and describing some iconic collections and products?
"The most elaborate Baroque service is undoubtedly the Swan Service, with over 2,200 pieces dating back to 1734. The relief that gives the service its name is clearly visible on the plate: a pair of swans swimming through the reeds of a pond, enclosed in a shell. In 2019, the service was complemented by an evolution of gourmet plates, which immediately met with consumer favor.
Another example is the cooperation with a cult American clothing brand, for which figurines were created based on Baroque angel models, customized with t-shirts bearing the brand's logo.
The Decor Worlds vase is an elaborate redesign of the Meissen Krater vases, presented exclusively for the first time in 2018 and based on vases designed by Ernst August Leuteritz: 221 scenes, 129 decorations from over 300 years of the Manufactory's history, all production techniques combined in one vase, painted by 27 painters. A wide variety of techniques have been used in a unique symbiosis that makes the vase a true work of art! Underglaze painting is combined with Indian decorations, Watteau scenes with floral decorations. This porcelain masterpiece is a true collector's item!"
What can be done to bring Gen Z even closer to the beauty and elegance of authentic masterpieces?
"Every product of the Manufactory embodies the history that has shaped MEISSEN porcelain from the Baroque era to the present day: remaining faithful to its roots while growing into the future with a new vibrancy of design.
Contemporary culture, lifestyle, and luxury trends serve as inspiration and combine with the rich, centuries-old heritage of the manufactories. The result is a contemporary interpretation.
Gen Z's tastes and needs are redefining, both positively and negatively, the ways in which luxury goods are produced and consumed, from both an aesthetic and strategic standpoint. There are two main forces at play, pulling in opposite directions: on the one hand, the push towards sustainability, a renewed love for craftsmanship, and attention to raw materials and their origins, the search for the enduring in opposition to fast fashion. The social responsibility of preserving the rich cultural heritage and bringing it successfully into the future is very clear.
To attract new consumers, the company has created new collections, with a nod to sustainability while maintaining the highest standards of craftsmanship.
Sustainability is inherent in the MEISSEN Manufactory, high German environmental and social standards are respected throughout the entire production process. Porcelain is produced responsibly 100% in Germany, and these sensitive issues are an added value to the quality of the products”.
Meissen is participating in 'Manifatture in scena'. Can you give us a preview of what you will be presenting at Milano Home?
"Meissen invented European porcelain in 1710 and, as a leading player, has shaped porcelain culture ever since. We love building bridges, both across history and between generations, between tradition and modernity.
The theater of Manifatture in scena will be the perfect stage to present the public with new, captivating Meissen decors, combined with the more classic ones, for a perfect mix and match”.
