Ceramics, Care, Passion, and Elegance

After exploring the beauty of wood, we now arrive at the third stop of the Grand Tour, dedicated to one of the most iconic and versatile materials of craftsmanship: ceramics. Whether it’s for decor, tableware, or furnishings, ceramics always represent an excellent choice.

This material embodies elegance, tradition, and everyday functionality, presented to us by master artisans from across Italy. Each creator brings their deep passion for their craft and the materials they use.

We’ll hear from brands that differ in origin, history, and personality: Pottery Roma, known for its unique pieces; Vito Nesta, whose work continually redefines the potential of the material; and Baroni Porcellane, carrying forward a rich family tradition.

Additionally, there’s Elena Milani, showcasing her “natural” ceramics; Ceramiche Sofia, offering traditional Sicilian maiolica with a modern twist; Pozzi Milano 1876, specializing in refined tableware; and Giannini Artistic Ceramics, focusing on the uniqueness and meticulous craftsmanship of each individual piece.

Pottery Roma. Ceramics in Every Form

Pottery Roma specializes in creating unique pieces made from ceramics and stoneware, particularly through a process that transforms white clay into marbled patterns. Once fired, these pieces visually emulate the appearance and hues of marble or semi-precious stones.

The designs draw inspiration from ethnic and archaic motifs, which are then reinterpreted with a modern twist.

New Generations: How do you ensure the innovation and future of a craft that demands such expertise, specialization, and creativity?

Living from fine craftsmanship is challenging in a world increasingly dominated by digitization and automation. Additionally, the lack of state interest in preserving intangible heritage poses a significant threat.

Passion alone isn’t enough; we must stand out and make ourselves indispensable by developing ideas and skills that few possess, thus thriving despite the competition brought by globalization and price wars.

How is a product of excellence like yours distributed? Who can truly convey its value to the final customer?

Our pieces are sold directly, ideally through designers or decorators with a cultured clientele capable of appreciating their uniqueness. Behind each item lies a wealth of artisanal knowledge honed over years of effort, experiments, failures, and triumphs.

Purchasing one of our creations means acquiring not just the object but also a piece of the artisan’s life and soul. That’s why it would be wonderful to see more art galleries dedicated to ceramics, as is common abroad.

What are your target markets in Italy and abroad?

Italy remains a primary market, but we also cater to the U.S. and Europe, especially France. In both the U.S. and the U.K., ceramics are highly valued as both an art form and a craft.

In these countries, ceramics are often viewed through a contemporary lens, despite the rich traditions in places like Britain. Additionally, many galleries treat ceramics as art pieces rather than just craft objects.

What new products will you showcase at Milano Home?

I will present my marbled ceramics and some stoneware works, all unique pieces.

Vito Nesta. Continuous Discovery

Grand Tour by Vito Nesta is a brand specializing in home decor with a distinctive focus on ornamentation. Through Grand Tour, we tell stories of places, cultures, and people by using decoration as a means of communication—not just as an aesthetic flourish.

Our homes are full of objects, but what we truly lack are items with a soul. For example, a plate at a dinner party can spark conversations, sharing stories and spreading culture.

New Generations: How do you ensure the innovation and future of a craft that demands such expertise, specialization, and creativity?

I have always been invested in young people and the next generation, dedicating significant energy to teaching at universities, supervising theses, and involving students in my projects. Some, like Matteo Stucchi and Mattia Meneghini, have since become professionals.

While I’m not concerned about young talent in design, I worry about the lack of interest in learning traditional crafts like ceramics, decoration, glasswork, or carpentry.

Without artisans, who will create our objects in the future? Who will carry forward Italy’s unparalleled artisanal knowledge?

How is a product of excellence like yours distributed? Who can truly convey its value to the final customer?

We distribute through e-commerce platforms as well as in physical stores.

An e-commerce platform must thoroughly understand the product and present it with compelling text and high-quality, styled images. Physical stores, on the other hand, rely on the retailer’s ability not just to sell the product but to offer a “dream” to customers.

What are your target markets in Italy and abroad?

We primarily sell abroad, especially in the United States. Unfortunately, Italy’s economic capacity is declining, making it difficult for shops to make significant investments.

Some stores adapt by prioritizing cheaper products at the expense of quality, while others persevere. Running a shop today requires strong aesthetic sensibilities, consistent customer loyalty, ongoing research, and an ability to offer what cannot be found online.

What new products will you showcase at Milano Home?

At Milano Home, I will unveil a collection I’m particularly proud of. Together with Alessandro Guerriero, one of the pioneers of Italian design and founder of Studio Alchimia in 1976, we created a collection titled “Alchimie.”

This collection features vibrant colors, bold contrasts, and geometric and abstract forms that interlock and interact, creating miniature universes of visual delight. Adding the finishing touch are diverse textures that blend seamlessly with flat graphic elements, making the pieces even more captivating and playful.

Baroni Porcellane. Ceramic Tales

Baroni Porcellane was founded in the 1970s, inspired by Anna Soldini's passion for hand-painted ceramics. Today, it continues to specialize in hand-decorated porcelain, tableware, home accessories, and wedding favors. Using the terzo fuoco technique, the Milan-based atelier employs motivated and passionate artisans who focus on fine details to create unique, one-of-a-kind pieces.

Their tools include brushes, nibs, sponges for dabbing, and powdered pigments, which are blended to create an extensive palette of tones, finished with accents of gold or platinum.

New Generations: How do you ensure the innovation and future of a craft that demands expertise, specialization, and creativity?

This is a craft passed down through generations, requiring mastery, skill, and precision. Techniques can be learned in specialized training schools or directly in the workshop. It demands dedication and creativity, and young people are often surprised to discover how fulfilling manual and artisanal work can be.

How is a product of excellence like yours distributed? Who can truly convey its value to the final customer?

Our creations are aimed at a niche luxury market with a high purchasing power and a shared passion for hand-decorated items. This clientele understands and appreciates the value behind such products.

What are your target markets in Italy and abroad?

I participate annually in the Salone del Mobile and now also at Milano Home. I enjoy personally sharing my story and showcasing my collections. Additionally, I work with representatives and retailers across Italy and internationally. We have stores in Monte Carlo, London, and the United Arab Emirates.

What new products will you showcase at Milano Home?

At Milano Home we will bring several collections that embrace three different styles: classic, contemporary and romantic floral, such as the Sania table service with Circus decoration, decorated in sugar paper color with bright gold finishes, or the Colbert table service with Kosiki decoration inspired by Japan with a stylized flower decoration made with a nib in a warm coral color with satin pure gold finishes.

But also the Plissè table service with Origins decoration, for which I took inspiration by wandering around the warehouse of the Royal Limoges factory where I found this old disused shape and decided to resume production by combining it with a floral decoration inspired by one of my first creations. mother (Anna Soldini) but revisited in a modern key, hence its name Origin: the origin of Baroni porcelain

Elena Milani. Inorganic Nature

Elena Milani designs and crafts artistic ceramics for interiors and gardens. Her work is organized into series, each born from a core idea that evolves to create unique, fully handmade pieces.

Every series is inspired by natural themes—plants, seeds, soil, leaves, fruits, insects—aiming to evoke the natural world through organic forms. Her design philosophy revolves around minimalism, striving to evoke nature without directly replicating it.

New Generations: How do you ensure the innovation and future of a craft that demands expertise, specialization, and creativity?

I dedicate at least a week each year to learning. I choose a specific technique to deepen or a skill gap to address, seeking out the best mentor or institution for that training.

Reflecting on the works of great masters is a source of inspiration that shapes new creative ideas. These ideas are guided by a desire to narrate our era and its challenges.

How is a product of excellence like yours distributed? Who can truly convey its value to the final customer?

I primarily rely on direct sales, allowing me to explain the production process and the concepts behind each creation. Selling directly fosters a connection with customers, turning each transaction into a personal and curated experience rather than a mass-market interaction.

What are your target markets in Italy and abroad?

People. I am still exploring and defining my market.

What new products will you showcase at Milano Home?

At Milano Home, I will present pieces from the TERRE, OSSA, OMBRE, and FLORA collections. These are both interior decor elements and art pieces, depending on the viewer’s perspective.

The collections draw inspiration from seeds, plant essences, and major environmental themes, offering a reflection on the beauty and fragility of our natural world.

Ceramiche Sofia. Traditional Décor, Contemporary Soul

Ceramiche SOFIA, founded by the Intonato brothers, is an artisanal company based in Caltagirone, specializing in unique hand-molded and hand-decorated majolica. Inspired by the colors and traditions of local ceramics from all eras, their designs are infused with a touch of modern aesthetics.
